"It is always interesting to attend Laura’s OD Salons…those attending are an eclectic mix of interesting and provocative individuals. Laura is a wonderful facilitator and a gracious host. It’s fun and a great way to step away from the grind to think about specific topics that relate to our work.
"I really enjoyed the meeting and would definitely attend others in the future. It was more than Laura described, a casual conversation over lunch that dug deeper into the issue than what one would expect from a light conversation.
What I got out of it was not an answer to my question but rather how other people view the question. It is interesting to me that people from different organization types and sizes struggle with the same issues as a small organization such as ours. I did not get answers but I did not expect them either. I did gain great knowledge on some techniques other administrators are using to address issues.
The biggest take-away from this lunch is the notion that an employee’s effectiveness is directly tied to whether or not they are being effectively managed. Additionally, when thinking about moving someone, you need to have a plan in place for structure and evaluation. As a small, nimble organization, we see the need to move someone to fulfill a gap and don’t necessarily do the planning to be able to say later if that was the correct decision."
"The lunch was a great opportunity to meet with others from Yale and other local organizations, to discuss various issues regarding employee tenure and contributions and benefit from the experience of those who have tried solutions in different organizations. It was fun to throw out challenging situations and solutions and gauge the reactions. It was an enjoyable yet educational experience. I would attend again."
"This was my first salon session and I enjoyed it very much. There was interesting discussion about the issue of employee tenure and whether the impact is positive or negative when employees stay in the same position for long periods of time. It is a complicated issue and not one that will be solved easily. It was good to hear the different perspectives and descriptions of tactics that have been tried. I believe now, more than ever, that good management includes helping employees to stay fresh, no matter whether they are moving around in the organization or learning new skills and abilities in place."
We are an organizational development consulting firm that helps people work together better. We're interested in how organizations can become more balanced, more compassionate, more energizing, more ethical, more responsible and still be profitable.
We're also interested in how people thrive and struggle as individuals in group and organizational life. Why is group and organizational life so hard sometimes? So great at others?
